Overview

14C-labeled protein molecular weight markers for gel electrophoresis and autoradiography. Gel electophoresis is a widely employed technique for determining the molecular weight of proteins. The mobility of a protein on polyacrylamide gels containing sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) is primarily a function of the size of the macromolecule. 0.02 µCi of each marker is sufficient for overnight detection by autogradiography.

  • Phosphorylase B: 97,400 Da
  • Albumin (BSA): 69,000 Da
  • Gammaglobulin subunit 1: 55,400 Da
  • Gammaglobulin subunit 2: 30,000 Da
  • Ovalbumin: 46,000 Da
  • Cytochrome C: 12,300 Da

Sample preparation for electrophoresis. Just prior to use:

  1. Make sure the solution is homogeneous. Some precipitation of the SDS is likely to occur upon thawing. It can be brought back to solution by gently warming the solution to 37 °C.
  2. Add 2-mercaptoethanol and SDS to your sample loading buffer (5% by volume) in a snap cap polypropylene tube and place in a boiling water bath for 3-5 minutes.
