RIG-I (Retinoic acid-Inducible Gene I) is a cytosolic pattern recognition receptor which is known to recognize RNA pathogens in cells. This protein triggers a type 1 interferon response and participates in the innate immune system. By identifying viral dsRNA, the RIG-I protein recognizes infected cells. The N-terminus of RIG-I contacts mitochondrial antiviral signaling proteins after being triggered by a dsRNA, thereby triggering the IFN-1 signaling pathway. Recent studies have shown that RIG-I is also involved in cancer, lupus nephritis, immunoglobulin A nephropathy, Crohn’s disease, and atherosclerosis.
