6-phenyl-2-(4-phenylphenyl)-1,3-benzoxazole, more commonly known as PBBO, is a fluorescent organic compound with high light output and is used as a secondary scintillator in liquid scintillation counting (LSC) cocktails. It is used in conjunction with primary scintillators to emit light from excited solvent molecules at a wavelength to match the sensitivity of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) found in liquid scintillation analyzers (LSAs) such as TriCarb™ or Quantulus GCT™.
PBBO is available in a 100g bottle for your research needs.
Bulk quantities of PBBO are available as catalog number 6002049.

PBBO, IUPAC preferred name 6-phenyl-2-(4-phenylphenyl)-1, 3-benzoxazole, has an aromatic ring structure fundamental for fluorescent properties.
PBBO is a secondary scintillator or wavelength shifter and converts shorter wavelength light to longer wavelength light that can be detected by Liquid Scintillation Analyzers (LSA) such as a TriCarb or Quantulus GCT.
PBBO re-emits light in the blue-green region of the spectrum which the PMT can detect more efficiently. This improves overall counting efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio.
PBBO has a molecular formula of C25H17NO, a melting point of 199 - 201°C and a fluorescence maximum of 395 nm. The exact fluorescence maximum can vary slightly depending on the solvent used.
