Overview
The ViaStain™ PI Staining Solution enables the user to quantitatively distinguish live and dead cells in pure cultures using the Cellometer or Cellaca systems. Propidium iodide (PI) is a membrane exclusion nucleic acid dye that only enters cells with compromised membranes (dead cells). When cell counting is performed using both brightfield and fluorescent imaging, cells that fluoresce in red are counted as dead, while the brightfield image provides the total cell count. The Cellometer or Cellaca software utilizes the total cell count and dead cell count to calculate percent viability.
