Bis-MSB Scintillator, 100 g

1,4-bis[2-(2-methylphenyl)ethenyl]benzene, commonly known as Bis-MSB, is a fluorescent organic compound with high light output and is widely used as a secondary scintillator in liquid scintillation counting (LSC) cocktails. It is used in conjunction with primary scintillators to emit light from excited solvent molecules at a wavelength to match the sensitivity of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) found in liquid scintillation analyzers (LSAs) such as TriCarb™ or Quantulus GCT™. Bis-MSB is available in a 100g bottle for your research needs.

Bulk quantities of Bis-MSB as catalog number 6002141 are available on request.

Overview

Bis-MSB, IUPAC preferred name 1,4-bis[2-(2-methylphenyl)ethenyl]benzene, has an aromatic ring structure fundamental for fluorescent properties.

Bis-MSB is a secondary scintillator or wavelength shifter and converts shorter wavelength light to longer wavelength light that can be detected by Liquid Scintillation Analyzers (LSA) such as a TriCarb or Quantulus GCT. Bis-MSB is a high solubility secondary fluor and enhances the light yield in LSC when used with PPO. Bis-MSB is characterized by its high quantum yield and blue emission.

The exact fluorescence maximum can vary slightly depending on the solvent used. For example, in cyclohexane, the maximum is ~415 nm, while in heptane, it's slightly lower at 416 nm.

The Molecular Formula of Bis-MSB is C24H22, a melting point of 180 - 182°C and a fluorescence maximum of 415 nm.
