Overview

GIP, or glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (formerly gastric inhibitory polypeptide), is a hormone produced in the upper gut that helps regulate blood sugar and fat metabolism, particularly after eating. Released in response to food, GIP stimulates insulin secretion from the pancreas and also influences appetite and energy balance. It works alongside GLP-1 and is a target for newer weight loss medications.

Key Functions of GIP

GIP is a powerful hormone with multiple effects throughout the body with its primary role related to glucose and nutrient metabolism.

  • Insulin Secretion (Incretin Effect): GIP is responsible for a large portion of the post-meal (postprandial) insulin response. It acts on the pancreatic beta-cells to enhance secretion of insulin-but only when blood glucose levels are elevated. This effect helps manage blood sugar after a meal.
  • Glucagon Secretion: Under conditions of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), GIP can stimulate the release of glucagon from pancreatic alpha-cells, which helps raise blood glucose.
  • Fat Metabolism: GIP promotes the uptake and storage of fat (lipogenesis) in adipose (fat) tissue and inhibits the breakdown of fat (lipolysis), functioning as an anabolic hormone to store energy.
  • Gastric Inhibition: The original name, "Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide," reflects its ability to weakly inhibit gastric acid secretion and slow down the rate at which food empties from the stomach
